Oasis Client Sue To Stop New Public Charge Rule
One of Oasis’ clients, Milton fled El Salvador, his country of origin, due to the abuse he suffered as an effeminate gay man. In the U.S., he lives with his mother, Rosa. Ever since winning asylum, Milton has given back to the community, proudly working at Harvey’s in the Castro and performing in Bay Area drag shows and charity events as “Lulu.”
Years later, in January 2020, after working hard and obtaining his citizenship, Milton finally had the opportunity to petition for his mother to obtain permanent residency. However, despite Milton’s efforts, because of new rules issued by the federal government on who will be deemed likely to become a public charge, his 62-year-old mother, Rosa may unfortunately no longer qualify to obtain permanent residency.
To fight this unjust new rule, Milton and Rosa have joined with other immigrants and nonprofits to sue the Trump administration for violating the law with the new public-charge restrictions.
At Oasis, we stand firmly with our clients, connecting them with attorneys and providing them with resources as they navigate fighting for their rights.
