FROM ADVOCACY TO ACTION
Securing rights and benefits for LGBTQ+ immigrants
Our commitment to supporting and empowering LGBTQ+ immigrants requires creating a landscape in which service providers are equipped to support the diverse and unique needs of queer and trans immigrants. We create legal access for queer and trans immigrants by increasing the number of culturally responsive legal and social services providers. Through trainings and presentations that addresses diverse global understandings of sexuality and gender, including history, societal context, and even language, we can begin to create more inclusive belonging for queer and trans immigrants in the realm of immigration relief.
At the beginning of 2024, we partnered with Immigration Equality to create a working group for LGBTQ+ immigrant service providers to hear updates on national policy, share best practices, and troubleshoot complex immigration cases. With Immigration Equality on the East and Oasis as the leader on the West Coast, this group serves as a bridge across the country to provide mentorship and share knowledge with immigration practitioners specializing in LGBTQ+ immigration. This collective meets every other month and has nearly two dozen participants. Having this collaboration has also been beneficial amidst recent changes in immigration policies and has allowed for better coordinated advocacy. Those interested in joining or learning more are invited to complete an interest form.
In 2024, our Asylum Program Director, Maria Elena Paniagua, facilitated an annual free training for mental health professionals to provide psychological evaluation reports for LGBTQ+ asylum seekers. This session informed mental health providers about the role of psychological evaluations in LGBTQ+ asylum cases and gave practical advice on how to conduct these evaluations in a manner that will strengthen the claims of LGBTQ+ asylum seekers.
Our training catalog includes several other topics like “LGBTQ+ Asylum Law,” “Asylum for Those Living with HIV,” “Naturalization Interview Preparation,” and more. Colleges, universities, service-provider organizations and agencies, and other interested parties can contact us to learn more about our trainings.
