Meet Our 2024 Social Services Intern

Under the supervision of our Social Services Program Director, Oasis hosts social services interns to help with direct client case management work, as well as research, advocacy, and outreach to community organizations. Meet our current Social Services intern, Ortencia Arteaga!

Ortencia (she/ella) is a first-generation Mexican American, born and raised in Redwood City. With over 22 years of experience working for San Mateo County, she is dedicated to serving the underserved low-income Latino community where she grew up. Ortencia’s passion for community support led her to pursue her bachelor’s degree in Human Development from Cal State East Bay and she is currently completing her internship for a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Texas, Rio Grande Valley.

As a mother of a trans woman, she was drawn to Oasis because of Oasis’ work in supporting LGBTQ+ immigrants and the fact that social work is integrated into that process. Outside of work, Ortencia enjoys spending time with family and friends while exploring the beautiful Bay Area.

We host social work graduate-level interns during the academic year as part of the MSW field placement process, but also welcome interns outside of an MSW program on a rolling basis. Our Social Services Program was officially established in 2021, formally allowing us to designate specific efforts to equip our clients with resources and care to address their intersecting needs.
