2023 Holiday Fundraiser “More Than the Journey”

In a world that isn’t always tolerant of people living authentically, Oasis Legal Services has been a lifeline for queer and trans asylum seekers fleeing danger since 2017.

As 2023 draws to a close, we reflect on the profound impact the Oasis community has had on LGBTQ+ immigrants and the important task of continuing and expanding our efforts in the new year.

Due to the severity of violence our clients have suffered in their lives, they need help to stabilize their mental health, navigate the immigration process, and integrate into their work and new lives in the U.S. At Oasis, we provide our clients with holistic support that extends beyond their immigration cases – we connect them with fundamental resources (support groups, healthcare, tutoring, and more) that significantly improve their livelihood.

For example, our client, Daria, a 40-year-old transgender woman, suffered hate-fueled attacks in her home country due to her gender identity. At Oasis, Daria shared that she felt accepted for the first time. After filing her asylum case, our Social Services team connected Daria to health, food, and housing resources to address her diverse needs. Now, Daria has an appointment to receive gender-affirming surgery, and next month, she will be eligible for a work permit and social security number. These important steps will allow Daria to build her life in the U.S. in a validating and self-determined manner.

Our theme, “More than the Journey,” explores how asylum seekers’ journeys are more than the physical odyssey from their home countries to the United States. Our clients have hopes and dreams and should not have to struggle alone. The above postcard was designed by an Oasis team member to visualize the journey our clients take into a world of acceptance and opportunity. We hope you consider joining us in making safety from harm a reality for more queer and trans asylum seekers.

The reality is that despite an estimated 60,000 undocumented LGBTQ+ immigrants in California, only 4% of LGBTQ+ funding in the U.S. supports LGBTQ+ immigrant issues (that’s 4 cents for every $100). For this reason, we rely heavily on community support to help sustain our life-saving work.

Our goal is to raise $15,000 by the end of the year. We could reach this goal if 500 people donate $30. Every dollar counts, and is appreciated.

Thank you for considering Oasis Legal Services for your end-of-year giving.
